Stansted Airport was opened in 1943 when it was used by the USAF during World War II. In 1966 become a civil airport. The first terminal building was opened in 1969. Further development at Stansted Airport began in 1984. In the last 10 years there has been a huge increase in passengers from 12 millions in 2000 to 21.9 millions in 2005.

Stansted Airport is situated 30 miles northeast of Central London just off the M11 at junction 8.
